Car-buggy crash leaves Amish man hospitalized


MERCER, Pa. — An Amish man is in intensive care at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown today as Pennsylvania State Police look for the hit-and-run driver who knocked him 50 feet away from his buggy.

Erven A. Byler, 22, of 5824 Pine Road, Heartstown, faces surgery today, the hospital said.

He was injured after his horse-drawn buggy was struck from behind on Pa. Route 358 just east of Huey Road in Perry Township at 12:50 a.m. this morning. The wreck killed Byler’s horse, said state police in Mercer.

Byler was flown from the accident site to St. Elizabeth’s.

Police are asking people to be on the lookout for a car with severe front-end damage and possible side and windshield damage.
