Youngstown man charged with assault on police

YOUNGSTOWN — A city man is in police custody facing multiple charges after leading police on a chase through the city and fighting with officers who took him into custody late Saturday, according to police reports.

Djuan Kimbrough, 31, of Volney Road is charged with driving under suspension, resisting arrest, aggravated menacing, felonious assault and failure to comply with police orders. He is being held in Mahoning County Jail.

Kimbrough’s brush with Youngstown police started at 11:37 p.m. Saturday when police say he made an illegal turn onto Albert Street. An officer pulled Kimbrough over and asked him to step out of the car he was driving, but reports say Kimbrough refused.

Kimbrough, reports say, told officers he was on federal probation and not getting out of the car. He then reportedly put his car in reverse and backed up toward the police car, then drove forward directly at the officer. The officer, drawn gun in hand, had to dive to the ground to avoid being hit by the car, the report said.

Kimbrough led officers on a chase through much of the East Side in the Albert Street and McGuffey Road area while driving directly at oncoming traffic and sometimes police vehicles, report say.

Kimbrough, according to reports, eventually drove to a home in the 1300 block of Bennington Street and tried to flee police on foot. He was tackled by an officer and then struck and swung at the officer reportedly using profanity. As more officers arrived to assist, Kimbrough was taken into custody.

Reports say Kimbrough, once in custody, threatened one arresting officer.
