State school superintendent to step down

COLUMBUS (AP) — After clashing with the governor and his plans to take over Ohio’s schools, the embattled state superintendent is looking for a new job.

The Columbus Dispatch is reporting Susan Tave Zelman is seeking a job at the University of Oregon’s education program. The newspaper says Zelman will visit the Eugene campus this week.

Zelman has led Ohio’s primary and secondary schools for nine years. Gov. Ted Strickland has said he wants to restructure the schools and has been critical of Zelman. Strickland wants to appoint an education czar who would report to him, instead of letting the 19-member state board of education and the superintendent run schools.

The University of Oregon has a nationally ranked graduate program in education.
