AUSTINTOWN — Township police will conduct a town hall meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday on preventing underage drinking.

The session will be in the meeting room of the Austintown branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, 600 S. Raccoon Road.

Appliances for scrap

SALEM — The Carroll-Columbiana-Harrison Solid Waste District will have its annual appliance, scrap metal and electronic collection from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 10 at Solomon’s Scrap Salvage, 7299 Salem Unity Road.

People can bring appliances ranging from refrigerators to fax machines for free.

People can also bring up to four car or small truck tires for free. There are fees for the disposal of larger tires.

‘Prom traffic blitz’

YOUNGSTOWN — A reminder for Chaney High School promgoers: City police will conduct a “prom traffic blitz” today, prom day, concentrating on impaired rivers, speed and safety belt violators. Officers will be working the streets near the high school on Hazelwood Avenue.

YOUNGSTOWN — A fire intentionally set in a garage at 312 E. Scott St. on the North Side around 11 p.m. Thursday spread to the vacant house, reports show. Damage was set at $10,000.

At 12:06 a.m. Friday, fire was deliberately set on the first floor of a vacant house at 249 E. Florida Ave. on the South Side. Flames spread through the floor and into a bedroom. A fire captain detected the odor of an accelerant. Damage was set at $1,000.

Neighborhood cleanup

YOUNGSTOWN — Give the Children a Chance Inc. is sponsoring a neighborhood cleanup. Residents of Truesdale Avenue, between Shehy and Rigby streets, are invited to attend a meeting from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Elizabeth Baptist Church Community Center, 7 S. Garland Ave., to plan the cleanup.

Spokeswoman Kathryn Hawks Haney said fliers have been distributed throughout the neighborhood, and the response has been positive. “People have already started sweeping the streets and tidying up,” she said.

Haney said Councilman DeMaine Kitchen, D-2nd, will be present at the first meeting to discuss what residents need to do to make the cleanup happen. For more information, call Hawks Haney at (330) 747-2273.
