MLB ROUNDUP | Friday’s other games

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Yankees 5, Mariners 1

NEW YORK — Chien-Ming Wang has turned into the New York Yankees’ stopper. Wang became the American League’s first six-game winner, ending the Yankees’ three-game losing streak. Wang (6-0) pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning, and Kyle Farnsworth, Joba Chamberlain and Mariano Rivera completed a four-hitter. The Yankees improved to 27-7 when Wang starts following a loss, winning 11 in a row, and he is 22-6 in those games. He’s even more consistent against Seattle, improving to 7-0 against the Mariners in seven career starts. Hideki Matsui hit an RBI single in the first inning and Melky Cabrera added a two-run double in the second off Erik Bedard (2-1).

Twins 11, Tigers 1

MINNEAPOLIS — Livan Hernandez baffled Detroit’s mighty offense for seven innings and Minnesota beat up the Tigers’ normally reliable bullpen. Hernandez (4-1) gave up just one run on eight hits to bounce back from a horrendous start in Texas, and the Twins scored four runs off Aquilino Lopez in the seventh inning to get some breathing room in their third straight win.

Blue Jays 2, White Sox 0

TORONTO — Shaun Marcum matched Mark Buehrle pitch for pitch and Shannon Stewart drove in the only runs, helping Toronto beat the White Sox for Chicago’s third straight defeat. Marcum (3-2) struck out nine and won for the first time in three starts, lowering his ERA to 2.70. He allowed just two hits, both singles by Orlando Cabrera, and walked three. Jeremy Accardo relieved Marcum after back-to-back walks with two out in the seventh. Accardo loaded the bases by walking Brian Anderson but got Juan Uribe to fly out to right. Jesse Carlson worked the eighth, Shawn Camp struck out one batter in the ninth and Scott Downs closed it out for his second save.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Phillies 6, Giants 5, 10 innings

PHILADELPHIA — Pat Burrell hit a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, lifting Philadelphia over San Francisco. Aaron Rowand gave the Giants a one-run lead with a solo shot leading off the top of the inning, but the Phillies rallied against Brian Wilson (0-1). Chase Utley singled with one out. After Ryan Howard was ejected after striking out, Burrell hit a 3-2 pitch into the left-field seats, sending the crowd into a frenzy on a chilly night.

Marlins 6, Padres 4

MIAMI — Dan Uggla hit two home runs, Mark Hendrickson pitched seven effective innings and Florida beat San Diego. Uggla’s second homer, a three-run shot off Justin Germano that traveled over the left-field scoreboard, was followed by a homer from Luis Gonzalez. It was the third time the Marlins hit back-to-back home runs this season.

Braves 2, Reds 0

ATLANTA — Tim Hudson pitched his 11th career shutout and Brian McCann hit a two-run homer, helping Atlanta end a season-high four-game losing streak. Hudson (4-2) gave up just three hits, and at one point retired 11 straight batters before Edwin Encarnacion singled leading off the eighth. Encarnacion went to second on Yunel Escobar’s throwing error, the first Cincinnati batter to get past first, but was eventually stranded at third on pinch-hitter Joey Votto’s groundout. McCann’s sixth homer of the season came in the fourth off Reds starter Edinson Volquez (4-1).

Astros 7, Brewers 4

HOUSTON — Miguel Tejada, Lance Berkman and Carlos Lee hit consecutive home runs in a four-run sixth inning to propel Houston over Milwaukee. Hunter Pence added a pair of home runs for Houston, one in the fifth inning and another in the eighth, and Roy Oswalt (3-3) evened his record after a shaky start to the season by allowing six hits and three earned runs in six innings. The Astros trailed 4-2 before Tejada’s two-run shot to left off starter Carlos Villanueva with one out in the sixth. Berkman followed with his home run to almost the exact same spot in the left field Crawford Boxes to make it 5-4 and give Houston its first lead of the game.
