Gift to church has connection to president
President William McKinley was born in Niles. His family moved to Poland when he was 9 years old so that the children could attend Poland Academy.
During his boyhood, he attended what was Memorial Methodist Church, now Poland United Methodist Church, and its Sunday school.
McKinley died Sept. 14, 1901, after being shot Sept. 6 during a public reception in Buffalo, N.Y.
Later, his widow, Ida Saxton McKinley, and Helen McKinley, his sister, donated funds to Poland United Methodist Church for a stained glass window featuring a portrait of the 25th president of the United States.
Church history includes an article from the Youngstown Telegram that mentioned the donation.
