BOARDMAN — Township police will be supplementing their regular patrols this weekend with high-visibility patrols because of prom.

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, teens are more at risk during prom season than at any other time of year. Statistics show traffic deaths among teens are highest during prom season weekends.

As the department wants to encourage students to celebrate without drugs or alcohol, officers will be targeting all violators for aggressive driving offenses and Operating Vehicle while Impaired-related violations including underage drinking. Funding for the patrols is provided by the Mahoning County OVI Task Force and the Ohio Department of Public Safety.

Landslide problems

WELLSVILLE — The Ohio Department of Transportation District 11 on Thursday again reduced state Route 45 to one lane west of Wellsville because of a landslide that began last year.

Dick Bible, the ODOT District 11 deputy director, said, “Our maintenance crews made temporary repairs to this site last fall in order to stabilize the roadway and keep it open to two lanes over the winter. Due to the rainfall earlier this week, those repairs are no longer effective.”

Two-way traffic will be maintained in one lane with temporary traffic signals.

The complete repair project will include building a retaining wall. Construction is to begin in July and be completed before school reopens. The estimated cost for the entire project is $250,000.
