Mooney holds on, wins SVC slugfest with rival Ursuline
Canfield remains unbeaten in the MAC after a 12-5 win over Struthers.
STRUTHERS — Cardinal Mooney scored five times in the first inning and held off a late rally by Ursuline Thursday to win 12-11 in a Steel Valley Conference baseball game.
Scott Smith, who gained the mound win, also had two hits, including a triple. Drew Fitzpatrick added three hits while Matt Durkin, Colin Hart and Brad Byers all added two hits for the Cardinals (18-4).
Mark Lapikas led Ursuline (15-5) with three hits and Ross Revella added a pair.
Western Reserve 8, Chaney 7
YOUNGSTOWN — Matt Kalbfell went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs for Western Reserve.
Tom Burton added two hits for the Blue Devils (9-8)
Victor Cardarelli had a three-run homer and Joe Balog added two hits for Chaney (6-14).
Poland 3, Howland 2
HOWLAND — Mark Turnbull’s hit scored Trent Vallinger from second base with the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth.
Vallinger reached on an error and stole second before scoring.
Senior Kevin Koval had three singles for Poland (9-5, 6-1 Metro Athletic Conference).
Sophomore Joe Aulizia had two singles for Howland (9-10, 3-6).
Canfield 12, Struthers 5
STRUTHERS — The Cardinals (17-2), who are in first place (9-0) in the MAC, broke away with a 6-0 lead and the Wildcats couldn’t make up the difference. Canfield’s 16-hit attack featured a double, two singles, stolen base and three runs scored by Mark Carrocce.
Jared Turocy hit a triple, single and scored once. Brian Fox hit a double single and drove in two runs while Jake Kucek, Brett Cooper, Kyle Vaclav and Dan Banna each hit two singles.
L.J. Schromofsky and Brian Palmer had two hits apiece for the Wildcats.
Salem 2, Campbell 1
SALEM — Derek Ball doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Salem slipped past Campbell.
Dan Fortney also singled in a run in the sixth as Salem (7-9, 3-6 MAC) did all its scoring in the inning. Campbell (10-7, 5-5) scored its lone run on a fourth inning solo home run by Dan Sacui.
Niles 10, Beaver Local 3
NILES — Dustin Petzak went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Anthony Capogreco added two doubles and two RBIs for Niles, which put the game away with an eight-run fifth inning.
Evan Bollinger gave up just one earned run over seven innings, holding Beaver Local to four hits.
East Palestine 16, Mineral Ridge 1
EAST PALESTINE — Nick Baiamonte pitched a two hitter and went 4-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs to lead East Palestine (13-3, 9-3 Inter Tri-County League Tier One).
Baiamonte struck out seven and had a double and triple. Taylor Snyder had two hits and three RBIs for the winners while Pat Buckley added two hits and a pair of RBIs.
Springfield 12, Jackson-Milton 0
NORTH JACKSON — Travis Richey doubled and singled and Bryan Visingardi doubled, singled and drove in three runs for Springfield (15-5), which took an 8-0 lead after two innings. Matt Semach added two hits.
Jackson-Milton (1-17) had two hits.
Hubbard 11, Newton Falls 1
HUBBARD — Bo Slemons had a double, single and two RBIs and Matt Shelton three singles and one RBI to lead Hubbard. John Madeline added two singles.
Frank Palestro pitched a 10-hitter with seven strikeouts for Hubbard (16-5, 11-1 Trumbull Athletic Conference), which scored eight runs in the fifth inning. Palestro is 3-0.
For Newton Falls, Johnny Davis had four singles.
Fitch 5, North Canton Hoover 3
AUSTINTOWN — Jimmy Kinnick pitched a five-hitter with 12 strikeouts for Fitch, which took a 5-0 lead. Kinnick is 3-1.
Nick Wiery and Tony Koch each had two singles for Fitch.
Hoover scored its three runs in the seventh inning on Evan Nicholson’s three-run homer.
Youngstown Christian 4, Leetonia 3
STRUTHERS — With the game tied 3-3, the Eagles (7-5) scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Tim Bridenstein, who went 3 for 4, tripled home Josh Bell. Ryan Gruszecki hit a pair of singles for the Bears (9-7). Eddie Gonda (4-2) came on in relief in the fourth inning and completed the contest for the win.
Rootstown 10, Southeast 5
ROOTSTOWN — Southeast could manage just five hits of Rootstown pitchers James McGall and Kyle Veon and all of them were singles. The Pirates fell to 6-12.

Niles 12, Struthers 3
STRUTHERS — Mike Kelly scattered five hits in working a complete game to pick up the win. Anthony Capogreco hit a triple, double and two singles to spark the Red Dragons. Mike Livi hit a double and two singles, while Evan Bollinger hit a double and single. Tyler Serich hit a pair of singles for Struthers.
Jackson-Milton 15, Southern 7
SALINEVILLE — Brian Windt went 2-for-2 and Joe Sarisky added two hits as Jackson-Milton took a 13-3 lead to gain its first win. Corey Weimer added three doubles.
Hubbard 9, Lakeview 8
HUBBARD — The Eagles rallied from a 7-0, to score two runs in the top of the ninth inning for the victory in the TAC game.
Mike Backes had four hits and Matt Shelton and Mike Carnahan two apiece for Hubbard. Kevin Cox collected four hits and Michael Pasternak three for the Bulldogs.
