Holocaust commemoration programs set
STAFF REPORT
YOUNGSTOWN — The Jewish Community Relations Council will have its annual Holocaust commemoration programs, Yom Hashoah (Holocaust remembrance) next week. The theme, “Do Not Stand Silent: Remembering Kristallnacht 1938,” was set by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.
The annual Shoah memorial ceremony is planned for 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane. The student-created multimedia presentation was developed under the supervision of Jessie McClain, Boardman Center Middle School teacher and Holocaust educator.
The ceremony will include Holocaust-inspired readings, historical perspective and a candle-lighting ceremony led by survivors and children of survivors.
The 15th annual community Holocaust commemoration event will be at noon Tuesday in the rotunda of Mahoning County Courthouse. This program will feature winners of the JCRC’s annual student Holocaust writing contest, the presentation of a Youngstown mayoral proclamation and a memorial candle-lighting service to honor the 6 million people who died in the Holocaust.
The Holocaust Commemoration and Education Task Force, a JCRC committee, is chaired by Rabbi Joseph Schonberger and Rochelle Miller, both of whom are children of Holocaust survivors. For more information, contact Bonnie Deutsch Burdman, JCRC director, at (330) 746-3251.
