Sex-abuse charges

SHARON, Pa. — A woman wanted on charges she sexually abused two boys under 16 has surrendered, Sharon police reported. Police Chief Michael Menster said Gloria Guthrie, 29, who lives on Spearman Avenue, reported to District Justice James McMahon’s office Tuesday morning.

She is charged with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, statutory sexual assault and two counts of corruption of minors.

Menster said one of the boys is 15. He was unsure of the other’s age, but said he is in his teens. The abuse occurred in the 300 block of Prospect Street between May and August last year, Menster said. Guthrie’s preliminary hearing is set for 10 a.m. next Thursday at McMahon’s office.

Gas-card giveaways

LISBON — Columbiana County’s Department of Job Family Services has given away $368,000 in gasoline cards since March 31. Eileen Dray-Bardon, the agency’s director, said a total of 1,229 people had received some 3,687 in cards. People could get up to $300.

The funds were given to help people with jobs get to work while gas prices skyrocketed. The county is using $500,000 in federal money. Dray-Bardon said that when the original money runs out, there may be some additional federal money to continue the program.

Salem road extensions

SALEM — Drivers now have a different route to get to the shopping area on the east side of the city.

Officials on Wednesday afternoon cut the ribbon for the extension of Bentley Road, which runs east and west, and Cunningham Road, which runs north and south.

The last 700 feet extension that united the roads cost $235,000, city officials said.

The connection gives drivers an opportunity to avoid slow traffic on East State Street, the city’s main east-west corridor.

A similar extension south of East State Street may take two years to plan and complete, officials said.
