3 Blonde Moms returning with more comedy from the home front
By John Benson
The trio has a new member, Beaumont Bacon.
After successfully growing its Northeast Ohio audience, comedy trio the 3 Blonde Moms is looking forward to its Youngstown return, which takes place Friday and Saturday at The Funny Farm. However, the act’s lineup has changed with Mom Joanie Fagan saying the group is even funnier than before.
“We had to recast when last year one of our moms [Maryellen Hooper] had a baby, so we added Beaumont Bacon, who was in ‘Jerry Maguire,’” said Fagan, calling from her Los Angeles home. “She’s hysterical. She’s from Texas and named all of her kids after Civil War heroes, but she can’t remember them, so she just calls them all Daisy. And her husband is named Angus.”
Big things are happening in the 3 Blonde Moms’ world, where currently the ladies are filming a documentary that culminates with a Mother’s Day gig outside Chicago. Fagan describes the concert film as a semi-reality show in the same vein as the somewhat scripted HBO series “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
Once in the can, the concert special, which includes plenty of backstage high jinks and interviews (some of which could come from the Moms’ upcoming Youngstown shows), is being pitched to television networks Lifetime and TBS. Fagan is hoping this special launches the 3 Blonde Moms into a television sitcom.
In addition, the comedic threesome is generating interest from Disney regarding 3 Blonde Moms’ adventure movies, similar to the Bob Hope and Bing Crosby “On The Road” or Abbot and Costello feature film series from decades ago.
All of this interest begs the question, what is it about Fagan, Bacon and Helen Keaney as the 3 Blonde Moms that has created such a large following?
“We seemed to tap into an unserved market,” Fagan said. “Our demographic is millions of moms worldwide. They are also the shoppers. There’s this whole thing on Wall Street now where people are trying to attract the alpha mom because once you attract the alpha mom, she tells all the beta moms what to buy.
“Like moms’ clubs and moms’ groups and working moms and stay-at-home moms. There’s just millions of groups of moms in every kind of area in the world. It’s like every mom in the world relates to us.”
Even though much of the act’s material is based on hilarious pregnancy, diaper and marital fodder, audiences can expect the evening to stray into an adult-light, PG-13 territory. Fagan, whose husband is from Cleveland, said she can’t wait to return to Northeast Ohio.
“Oh, we’re so excited,” Fagan said. “We love it. We love all the Youngstown DJs. We always do radio in the morning, and we’re so excited for people to meet Beaumont. They’ll love her.
“And Helen is still married to the felon. And she’s still not sure what he did, but she said it rhymes with ‘hamslaughter.’ She said he can never cheat on her, because if he leaves the house, the ankle bracelet will go off.”
