Softball shut out

CHICAGO — The YSU softball team lost its fourth straight contest and was swept by Loyola after dropping a 10-0 decision on Sunday afternoon.

The Penguins are 2-14, 0-3 Horizon League while the Ramblers are 9-12, 4-1.

The Ramblers sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Loyola’s Amy Solava allowed just one hit and struck out six in five innings.

Baseball team swept

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Western Kentucky University hit four home runs in game one and got a strong pitching performance from Matt Ridings in game two in a doubleheader sweep, 20-10 and 5-2 of YSU.

The Hilltoppers are 13-10 while the Penguins are 5-14.

WKU erupted for 20 runs on 18 hits in the opener but YSU starter Chuck Schiffhauer gave the Penguins a chance in the nightcap.

He allowed only three earned runs on nine hits and struck out six in seven innings in a losing effort.

In the nightcap, the Hilltoppers scored a run in the second and went up 4-0 after a three-run fifth.

Josh Page’s solo homer in the sixth cut the margin to three, but the Hilltoppers scored in the bottom of the inning to keep the lead at 5-1.

The Penguins loaded the bases with nobody out in the eighth but were only able to get one run across.

Sean Lucas singled a run home to make the score 5-2, but reliever Garrie Kreuger came in to get a strike out and inning-ending double play.

In the first game the Penguins led 1-0 after the top of the second, but the Hilltoppers plated five runs with two outs in the bottom of the inning to take a four-run advantage.

After YSU scored twice in the top of the third to cut the lead to two, WKU answered with six runs in its half of the third, four in the fourth and two more in the fifth. The Hilltoppers had a grand slam in both the third and fourth.

YSU scored seven runs in the ninth, sending 13 men to the plate thanks to five walks and three hit batters.

Stocke ties for ninth

BLOOMINGTON, IND. — YSU junior men’s golfer Ryan Stocke tied for ninth place after his two-round total of 146 to lead the Penguins at the Adidas Hoosier Invitational which concluded early due to rain.

As a team, YSU finished 16th out of 18 teams with a score of 613 (300-313).

Stocke shot two rounds of 73, while sophomore Tim Morrow shot a 153 (78-75) which tied for 54th.

Senior Ross Beal and sophomore Jon Hamarik tied for 70th both with a 157 (81-76).

Freshman Michael Turner placed 79th with a two round total of 161 (81-80).

Eastern Kentucky won the tournament with a 304-278—582.

Tiara Scott honored

YOUNGSTOWN — Junior Tiara Scott was named the Most Valuable Player of the YSU women’s basketball team and seniors Lauren Branson, Heather Karner, Kira Mowen and Jessica Schloemp were honored at the annual awards banquet.

Scott was named to the All-Horizon League Second-Team and All-Newcomer Team after averaging 13.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

She also led the team in scoring with 15 points per game against Horizon League opponents.

Scott also led the Penguins with a .545 field-goal percentage, which ranks seventh on the YSU single-season chart.

Branson, a Horizon League All-Defensive Team selection in 2007-08, was named the team’s Defensive Player of the Year and led the team with 55 steals and 167 assists.

Junior Velissa Vaughn earned the Most Improved Player Award after starting 15 of the last 16 games and ranking third on the team with 7.9 points per game overall and 11.4 points per game against Horizon League foes.

Karner, the team’s leading scorer with 14 points per game, garnered the Dedication Award.

She set a school record with 87 3-pointers in 2007-08 and ranks sixth all-time with 139 career 3-pointers.

Mowen, who played in 17 games, earned the Spirit Award.

Schloemp picked up the Penguin Hustle Award after leading the team and ranking second in the Horizon League with 7.2 rebounds per game. Schloemp also finished her career with 618 rebounds.

Gymnastics results

AUSTINTOWN — Gymnasts from the Youngstown area competed over the weekend in the Ohio Boys USA Gymnastics State Championships held at Fitch High School.

Youngstown Gymnastics Center took third place in the Level 4 competition, while the Ohio Gymnastics Institute finished in sixth place in the Level 10 competition.

Local teams from Austintown, Boardman and Liberty competed in the event.

Individually Grason Zinni (7-and under, Level 4) from Olympic Dreams in Liberty finished first on the floor exercise, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar and was third on the pommel horse.

He also took first place in All-Around with 57 points.
