NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Mayor Anthony Mastrangelo said the city is just waiting for the appropriate paperwork to be completed before lawmakers give a group of area men the OK to proceed with their plans to replace the bridge in Cascade Park.

The 60-foot-long structure, which extends over Big Run Creek and links two areas of the park, has been closed nearly two years.

Earlier this month, Paul Buck, James Lombardo and Bob Smith committed to donating their labor and some of the materials. The men are looking to complete the project in time for the annual Back to the ’50s Classic Car Show in early July.

At a council meeting last week, lawmakers indicated their intentions to approve the project once they have a chance to review the plans and make sure all of the documents — including design specifications and state permits — are in order.

“The city just needs to make sure we have the right paperwork in place, especially for liability purposes,” Mastrangelo explained. “But other than that, we’re grateful these men are willing to do this. Why would we say no? It’s a great offer.”

The city hasn’t had the money to replace the structure, officials said. The estimated cost of the project is close to $100,000.
