Deal to end suit over woman killed in crash

COLUMBUS (AP) — The state of Ohio has reached a tentative settlement with the family of a woman who was killed in a fiery crash with two state highway patrol troopers.

The family of 32-year-old Lori Smith would receive $1.1 million under the agreement. Smith was killed when a state highway patrol car driven by Trooper Joshua Risner collided with her pickup truck in a 2006 crash. Sgt. Dale Holcomb, another trooper riding with Risner, was also killed.

Smith’s family had claimed that Risner was speeding and had improperly activated his emergency lights just before the 2006 crash.

The final settlement has not yet been filed in court. The two sides have signed a confidentiality agreement.
