Trumbull school offering training for jobs in demand

If you’re not interested in welding but are wondering what else may be in demand in the Mahoning Valley, consider health-related fields or office technology.

Employers are actively searching for nursing aides and medical assistants in health care, and business technology for the office, according to Vicki Thompson, adult education director at the Trumbull Career and Technical Center.

“We only offer courses if there is a demand for them by employers in our economic region, and that’s the case with those three fields,” Thompson said.

Thompson said that since last fall, 30 people have successfully competed nurse aide training in a program that is governed by the Ohio Board of Health. “The demand is there from hospitals and doctors’ offices,” Thompson said.

The need is also apparent in office technology, where Thompson said the school’s placement rate is 99 percent. She said word has spread especially to those people who are either out of work or about to lose their jobs.

“We’ve had inquiries from about a half-dozen people from Indalex about getting into this field,” Thompson said. Indalex Aluminum Solutions in Girard is under threat of closing due to economic conditions.

Thompson said business information technology and computerized office technology have become very popular classes as people search for other career alternatives with better employment possibilities.
