Title defense tickets go on sale Friday

YOUNGSTOWN —Tickets for Kelly Pavlik’s first middleweight title defense will go on sale at noon Friday at all Ticketmaster locations.

Pavlik, who holds the WBC and WBO titles, will fight WBO No. 1 contender Gary Lockett on June 7 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Tickets are priced at $500, $300, $200, $100 and $50 and can be purchased by calling Ticketmaster at 1-800-736-1420 or by visiting www.ticketmaster.com.

Tickets are also available at the Boardwalk Hall box office.

Pavlik won the titles with a seventh-round knockout of Jermain Taylor in September at Boardwalk Hall. His rematch bout with Taylor, which he won by unanimous decision, was not a title defense.

Penguin softball team beats Michigan St.

OXFORD — Senior McKenzie Bedra went 2-of-4 with a three-run home run and four runs batted in and sophomore Danielle Chase pitched a five-hit complete game to lead the YSU softball team to a 6-2 win over Michigan St. at the Best Western Miami Invitational.

The Penguins (1-10) also dropped a 5-1 decision to Penn State in the tournament.

After falling behind 1-0 after the top of the first, Bedra belted her second home run of the season to put the Penguins ahead 3-1.

Senior Bethany Hafley’s sacrifice fly plated Jamie Fornal for a 4-1 advantage.

The Spartans cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth but Katy Potokar answered with a run-scoring single to extend the YSU lead to 5-2.

Bedra added a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth.

Against Penn State, Bedra went 2-for-3 and Fornal had an RBI single in the third.

Men’s golf takes 12th

BETHANY BEACH, DEL. — The YSU men’s golf team finished in 12th place out of 20 teams at the George Washington Invite at Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club.

Junior Ryan Stocke carded a three round total of 189 which tied for 13th place.

YSU shot rounds of 315, 309 and 154 for a three-round total of 778.

Other finishers for the Penguins included sophomore Tim Morrow who tied for 36th with a score of 193 (80-77-36), senior Ross Beal tied for 65th with a 200 (83-79-38), freshman Michael Turner with a 201 (76-83-42), and freshman Spenser Sulzener with a 208 (84-78-46).

Ackerman is honored

NEW WILMINGTON, PA. — Westminster College senior basketball player Emilee Ackerman received an honorable mention for the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Div. III all-american team. Ackerman averaged 23.5 points per game. Her 1,483 career points and 554 points this year are school records. She also averaged 9.5 rebounds per game.

Harding sets marks

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The Westminster College men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Shamrock Invitational hosted by Coastal Carolina Univ. The Titans posted nine top 20 times and distances in six events.

On the women’s side, junior Megan Harding placed ninth in the 200 meters (25.58), breaking a six-year-old school record of 26.17 held by Ashley Pyle, while Harding also tied Pyle’s school record in the 100 at 12.68 for 19th place.

Senior Jess Cooper (Laurel) took 11th in the triple jump at 10.9 meters and 11th in the high jump. Kelsie Crowder (Newton Falls) also placed 18th in the high jump at 1.5.

BEAVER FALLS, PA. — Penn State Beaver rallied from a 6-0 deficit Monday to defeat the Geneva baseball team 10-9. Geneva (7-4) had won seven straight while the Lions are 5-2.

FINA to examine suits

EINDHOVEN, Netherlands — The slick new swimsuit that has led to 12 world records already this year will be examined by swimming’s governing body amid debate about the quest for speed in the pool. There have been 13 world records set since mid February, 12 in the LZR Racer, a full-length body swimsuit made by Speedo.
