HARRISBURG — Today is the deadline for residents of Pennsylvania to register and still be able to vote in the April 22 primary election. Volunteers for Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton made big pushes for more voter support across the state over the weekend.

Driver faces DUI charge in New Castle fatality

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — A New Castle woman was killed and a man seriously injured when their car was struck by another car whose driver was charged with driving under the influence.

Patty J. Conner, 69, of 141 Independence Lane, New Castle, was pronounced dead at Jameson Hospital after the crash Saturday on state Route 108 in Hickory Township. Walter Conner, 74, of the same address, was taken by helicopter to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was in critical condition. Aaron T. Zentz, 25, of 2991 Acer Road, New Castle, who was driving the other car, was found by the state police to have a blood-alcohol content of 0.227. That is nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08. Police said other charges are possible after an investigation.

Walter Conner was making a turn in his car about 8 p.m. when the car was struck by Zentz’s car. Zentz received minor injuries.

Fire hits Warren home

WARREN — A house at 1151 Hayes Ave. that had been vacant one week suffered major damage in a fire Sunday. Neighbors reported the blaze just before 6 a.m., but the house was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. The front wall of the house collapsed before the fire was extinguished. The cause is under investigation.

Kent Trumbull funding

CHAMPION — U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, will present a check today to Dr. Wanda Thomas, dean of Kent State University Trumbull Campus, for $238,754. The money will be used for regional training through the Northeast Ohio Advanced Manufacturing Institute. The presentation will occur at 10 a.m. in the Technology Building, 4314 Mahoning Ave. N.W. The funding was secured by Ryan through the U.S. House Appropriations committee, of which he is a member.

About pest management

CORTLAND — The Trumbull County Beekeepers Association will meet at 2 p.m. April 13 at the Trumbull County Agriculture Building, 520 W. Main St. Denzil St. Claire of Queen Right Apiaries will speak about pest management. The public is invited to attend the free event. Take a food item to share for a potluck dinner after the meeting.

Dinner to be benefit for Louisiana parish

YOUNGSTOWN — St. Patrick Church, 1420 Oak Hill, will sponsor a spaghetti dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 6 in the church social hall as a benefit for a parish in Slidell, La., that was devastated by Katrina three years ago. Dinner is $6.50 for adults, and $3.50 for children eight and under. Proceeds will be used for construction at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish that sustained $20 million in damages during the hurricane. Several members of St. Patrick Church will travel to Slidell to assist with rebuilding projects at the parish complex.
