Man wearing bulletproof vest shot, killed in Campbell

Sunday’s victim is the city’s second homicide of 2008.

CAMPBELL — A 22-year-old Campbell man wearing a bulletproof vest was shot and killed early Sunday.

Willie B. Hunt of Oxford Street was the city’s second homicide victim this year.

He was found lying on Robinson Road with a gunshot in the chest just above the vest, police said. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was declared dead.

Someone spotted Hunt lying in the road near 11th Street about 4:30 a.m. and called police. No one reported hearing gunshots. Police found two shell casings in the street and are continuing to investigate.

In February, Diana Noble, 39, of Howland was the city’s first homicide victim of the year.

She was shot in her car near the Michael J. Kirwan Homes, a public housing complex on Jackson Street. She drove herself and her boyfriend home to Howland before dying of her wound.

Her boyfriend provided vague descriptions of two men and said he and Noble had been smoking crack cocaine the night of the shooting.

There have been 11 homicides in Mahoning County so far this year. Eight of them have been in Youngstown. Six of those eight died in an arson on Youngstown’s East Side on Jan. 24. All of this year’s Youngstown killings occurred on the East Side.
