What season is this?
What season is this?
It doesn’t feel a whole lot like Easter.
Most obviously, people in Ohio rarely sing, “I’m dreaming of a white Easter.” Not that snow on the ground is unheard of, especially when Easter falls so close to the last day of winter.
Easter is supposed to be a time of almost unbridled optimism. We turn our backs on winter, look ahead to spring and enjoy the simple pleasures of seeing a crocus or daffodil bloom.
It’s a little tougher this year to be upbeat. The economy is shaky, the nation’s politics are taking some ugly turns and while the death toll is down in Iraq, there’s no end in sight for the war there. In short, uncertainty and uneasiness abound.
Which makes the message of Easter all that more important this year, And it is a message that can be appreciated by Christians and nonChristians alike. Redemption, rebirth, rejuvenation and rejoicing are a part of life’s cycle. Even on a cold spring day in Ohio. Happy Easter.
