Re-key your own locks with Kwikset device

Typically, when you need a lock re-keyed for security or convenience, you call a locksmith.

Kwikset’s new SmartKey lock lets you do the job yourself.

A SmartKey lock can be re-keyed in three steps that take fewer than 30 seconds, without removing the lock from the door. Re-keying lets you change a lock so a lost, stolen or loaned key will no longer open it, or it lets you configure multiple locks so they can all be operated with the same key.

SmartKey deadbolts also have BumpGuard protection, which the manufacturer says makes them virtually impervious to the lock-picking technique called lock bumping.

The locks will soon be available at major home-improvement retailers. Prices range from about $30 to $200.

Ed Begley Jr. shares ‘green’ tips in book

If there’s a poster person for the green movement, it’s Ed Begley Jr.

The actor has been an eco-evangelist for almost 40 years, since long before environmentalism was hip and HGTV gave him a platform. Now he’s gathered his advice into a book, “Living Like Ed.”

The book is filled with Earth-friendly ideas, from simple solutions such as putting on a sweater instead of hiking up the thermostat to big commitments like installing a wind turbine. His enthusiasm is obvious, but it’s tempered by comments from his less-zealous wife, Rachelle Carson-Begley.

“Living Like Ed” is published by Clarkson Potter — on recycled paper, of course — and sells for $18 in softcover.
