NCAA Men’s Tournaments: Saturday’s other games

East Regional

Washington State 61, Notre Dame 41

DENVER — Derrick Low scored 18 points and Kyle Weaver added 15, and Washington State won a clash of styles in beating Notre Dame in the second round of the East Regional. The Cougars held Irish star Luke Harangody to 10 points, half his average, and they limited high-flying Notre Dame to half its scoring average, too. Robbie Cowgill added 12 points for the fourth-seeded Cougars (26-8), who are headed for Charlotte and a regional semifinal game. The only other time the Cougars won twice in the NCAA tournament was back in 1941, when they advanced to the national championship, losing to Wisconsin 39-34. Fifth-seeded Notre Dame (25-8) averaged 80.6 points, and Washington State allowed 80 points just once all season, in an 81-74 loss at UCLA on Jan. 12. The Fighting Irish’s previous low for points came Nov. 18, when they lost to Baylor 68-64.

South Regional

Stanford 82, Marquette 81 (OT)

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Brook Lopez made a baseline leaner with 1.3 seconds left in overtime and scored 30 points to give Stanford a victory Saturday night over Marquette to advance to the round of 16 in the South Regional. Marquette’s Jerel McNeal scored a career-high 30 points and hit three 3-pointers in overtime. The Cardinal advance to face the winner of Sunday’s Texas-Miami game. Stanford trailed 69-68 with 1:44 to play when Marquette center Ousmane Barro fouled out, sending Lopez to the line. After Lopez hit both free throws, McNeal drove for a bucket to make put the Golden Eagles up 71-70 with 1:10 to play. With 8 seconds to play, Mitch Johnson missed a layup and Robin Lopez — Brook’s twin brother — was fouled in the lane. Robin Lopez, a 67 percent free-throw shooter, missed the first shot and swished the second to tie it at 71-71. McNeal launched an off-balance 3-pointer with about 5 seconds left, and Marquette came up with the loose ball. But Brook Lopez blocked Lazar Hayward’s fallaway shot and the game went to overtime.

Midwest Regional

Wisconsin 72, Kansas State 55

OMAHA, Neb. — Trevon Hughes matched his career high with 25 points, and third-seeded Wisconsin made Kansas State freshman star Michael Beasley disappear in the second half in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Saturday. Beasley scored 23 points in what might be his last college game, but he had only six after halftime while the third-seeded Badgers (31-4) set a school record for wins in a season. Wisconsin heads to Motor City with wins in 12 straight games and in 25 of the past 27.

Kansas 75, UNLV 56

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The top-seeded Kansas pulled away from UNLV in the second half and romped to a 75-56 victory Saturday at the NCAA’s Midwest Regional. Mario Chalmers led the way with 17 points, but he had plenty of help. Russell Robinson scored 13, Brandon Rush 12, Sherron Collins 10, Darrell Arthur 9 and Darnell Jackson 8. The Rebels shot 27 percent (12 of 45) and were outrebounded 36-26. Kansas shot 58 percent. The Runnin’ Rebels barely had enough personnel to finish the game. With only 10 players in uniform to begin with, they had one starter, Joe Darger, foul out with more than 9 1/2 minutes remaining; another, Rene Rougeau, quickly followed him to the bench with his fifth. UNLV’s offense basically consisted of 6-footer Wink Adams trying to drive the lane, draw a foul and hit the free throws. He scored 25 points — hitting 15 of 17 at the line — but Curtis Terry was the only other player in double figures with 12. The Rebels shot 27 percent (12 of 45) and were outrebounded 36-26. Kansas shot 58 percent.

West Regional

Xavier 85, Purdue 78

WASHINGTON — C.J. Anderson and Drew Lavender each scored 18 points and Josh Duncan had 16, and No. 3-seeded Xavier was surprisingly efficient on offense in an 85-78 victory over Purdue that put the Musketeers in the West Regional semifinals.

Keaton Grant scored 19 for the Boilermakers, who have won 10 straight first-round games but have exited without another win in half those tournaments — including two in a row. The Musketeers were 26-for-33 at the line and 27-for-50 from the floor against a team that led the Big Ten in field goal percentage defense. The 85 points scored by Xavier were the most allowed by Purdue this season. Lavender, a 5-foot-7 guard, had nine assists and provided Xavier with a pivotal basket after the Musketeers frittered away an almost insurmountable lead in this defensive struggle.
