YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State University students looking for a professional position, summer job, internship or co-op

opportunity are invited to attend the 2008 Spring Job Expo sponsored by YSU’s Career and Counseling Services. Nearly 90 local, regional and national employers will be available to discuss employment opportunities, distribute organizational information and accept r sum s from YSU’s students and alumni. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 9 in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center. All majors are welcome and advanced registration is not required.

‘Writing the Holocaust’

YOUNGSTOWN —Serbian Jewish writer David Albahari will visit Youngstown State University Tuesday through Thursday and offer a public lecture titled “Writing the Holocaust” at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Ohio Room of Kilcawley Center. He will discuss his book “Gotz and Meyer,” which tells the story of the destruction of the Serbian Jewish community in 1941-42. He also will talk about the moral issues writers have to deal with when they write about the Holocaust. Albahari will also be speaking to YSU classes during his visit. His appearance is sponsored by YSU’s Judaic and Holocaust Studies.

Niles open enrollment

NILES — The Niles City School District is accepting open enrollment applications for the 2008-09 school year. Parents are advised to call the district administration office at (330) 652-2509 to schedule an appointment to complete the application forms. Students from any school district in Ohio may apply and enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis as determined by available openings at reach grade level.

Lakeview open enrollment

CORTLAND — The Lakeview Local School District will be accepting open enrollment applications for the 2008-09 school year from 8 to 11 a.m. and noon to 3 p.m. April 7 through April 28. Applications must be picked up only by the parent or guardian at the superintendent’s office at 300 Hillman Drive. Completed applications and material must be returned to that office by 3 p.m. April 28. No information will be given over the telephone.

Girard open enrollment

GIRARD — Girard City Schools will accept applications for open enrollment for 2008-09 for pupils entering kindergarten through the sixth grade only. Beginning Tuesday, applications can be picked up in the superintendent’s office at 704 E. Prospect St., between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. They must be completed and returned to that office by April 11.

Greenberger lecturer

SHARON, Pa. — Ray Suarez, senior correspondent on “The NewsHour” television program, will be the speaker at Penn State Shenango’s Greenberger Family Memorial Lecture at 7 p.m. April 7. The event is free and open to the public and will be in the campus auditorium at 147 Shenango Ave. Doors open at 6 p.m. Suarez, with 30 years of experience in the news business, joined “The NewsHour” in 1999 after a stint with National Public Radio where he was host of “Talk of the Nation.” He is also an author. Previous Greenberger Lecture speakers include Wolf Blitzer, Helen Thomas, Robert Kennedy Jr., Ann Compton, Peter Bergen, Nina Totenberg and Seymour Hersh.

Wake-A-Thon planned

YOUNGSTOWN — Ursuline High School will hold its 18th annual Wake-A-Thon for the homeless April 12 and 13.

The event raises money to benefit area homeless and, since its inception, has netted more than $190,000 for the cause.

This year’s event begins at 7:30 p.m. April 12 and ends at 6:30 a.m. April 13 and is co-sponsored by the Ursuline High School Home and School Association and the Ursuline Student Council. Students solicit donations and, in return, agree to stay up through the night, during which time they will participate in various supervised activities. All money collected with be divided equally among the Rescue Mission, the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Beatitude House, three local agencies providing services to the homeless. Anyone interested in donating the event can do so through any Ursuline student or by mailing them to: Wake-A-Thon, Ursuline High School, 750 Wick Ave., Youngstown, Ohio 44505-2892.

Discover Day at Malone

CANTON — The Malone College office of admissions will hold a Discover Day for high school juniors and seniors April 7. Participants will see an admissions presentation, get a campus tour and have lunch with a professor from their major of interest. Visit Penn State Shenango

SHARON, Pa. — Penn State Shenango will hold an open house for high school juniors and seniors on March 31 and another for adult learners April 2. The high school program will begin at 6 p.m. in Room 105 of Sharon Hall. There will be meetings with students, a campus tour and information on admission and student financial aid. Participants can even sit in on a college class. To make a reservation, call (724) 983-2803. The adult open house will begin at 6 p.m. in Room 223 of Lecture Hall. Adult students will be on hand and there will be information on financial aid, available degree programs and the admissions process. Tutor Training Workshop

MONACA, Pa. — Penn State Beaver Adult Literacy Action (ALA) will offer a free, 12-hour Tutor Training Workshop from 6 to 9 p.m., April 21, 23, 28, and 30 at the ALA Office, 336 College Avenue, Beaver. The workshop is designed to instruct volunteers interested in working as one-on-one tutors or classroom aides. Participants will learn about the various facets of the ALA program, including GED preparation and how to teach reading. Upon completion of the workshop, volunteers will receive a National ProLiteracy America Volunteer Tutor Training Certificate of Completion.
