No word on punishment for nurse who gave wrong shots

LISBON — An official at the Ohio Board of Nursing said she cannot comment on whether a nurse may face discipline for giving the wrong injection to local students.

The 15 students in the health program at the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center were apparently not hurt.

Lisa Emerich, the manager for education, practice and administration for the state nursing board, said Friday she could not comment on if a complaint has been filed.

Any discipline stemming from an investigation would eventually become a public record, she said.

Edna Anderson, the superintendent at the career center, recently said that students who needed a tuberculosis test as part of the program instead apparent received a polio injection.

None of the students apparently had any adverse reactions.

The nurse was from the Lisbon Community Health Center, which is an arm of the Community Action Agency, a nonprofit organization that runs a variety of social service programs. The nurse’s name has not been released.

Carol Bretz, the head of the CAA, said her agency has already conducted an investigation along with the health center, but she said she could not comment on any results

Bretz said the situation was very upsetting, and she could understand why people were upset.

Bretz said the two medications “are the same size and look similar.”
