BOARDMAN ¬≠— Phi Mu Sorority Alumnae met on March 9 at the home of Mrs. John Barkett on Wolcott Drive for a Founder’s Day ceremony held in observance the 156th anniversary of Phi Mu Sorority.
Breakfast for Scouting brings in $23,000
The 2008 Celebration of Scouting Breakfast brought in more than $23,000, surpassing the Friends of Scouting Committee’s goal of $20,000.
The breakfast took place March 4 at the Holiday Inn in Boardman and was sponsored by Aqua Ohio and Compco Industries and honored Helen Stambaugh with the Distinguished Scouter Award for her many years of support of the Boy Scouts of America and of Mahoning County.
The event kicked off the Friends’ campaign for this year, which will continue throughout the spring. Book Fair scheduled to ‘Plant Seed to Read’
YOUNGSTOWN — The Second Annual Book Fair of Youngstown, “Plant the Seed to Read,” will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 5 at Fellows Riverside Gardens.
The Altrusa Club of Youngstown, in partnership will Mill Creek MetroParks, PBS Channels 45 49, and the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, is sponsoring the event. Admission is free.
Activities will include storytellers, cooking demonstrations, craft activities and creative writing exercises. Children’s authors Bender Bender, authors of “Ribbit!: Flip and See Who Froggy Can Be,” and Bobbie Hinman, author of “The Knot Fairy,” will present and sign their books. PBS characters Super Why and Princess Presto, YSU’s Pete the Penguin and the library’s Ready to Read Raccoon will make appearances. The library also will present the “Baby Brilliant” program.
At 11:30 a.m., winners of the 2008 Reading Rainbow Young Writers & Illustrators Contest will be announced.
First Book Mahoning Valley will give each child a book. Sign language interpreters will be available. Child-friendly snacks and lunch items will be for sale in the Garden Café.
Because of limited space, no strollers will be permitted in the Davis Center during the event.
Canfield Fair adds 20 new categories
CANFIELD — Canfield Fair’s Arts and Crafts Department has added more than 20 new categories for judging, from lamp shades to garden art to creative cards, and quilts divided into hand and machine quilting. A category for baskets to be donated to the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley also has been added.
Those who exhibited in 2007 will automatically receive the Arts and Crafts Book in 2008. New exhibitors may receive a 2008 Arts and Crafts book by calling the Canfield Fair Office no later than April 4 at (330) 533-4107 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Chapter of ABWA picks Woman of the Year
YOUNGSTOWN — The ABWA Tri-Gold Prime Time Chapter of Mahoning County met March 12 at Rusty’s and announced its Woman of the Year, Elena Nigro.
She has been a very active member of the chapter for 24 years and has been vice president twice and treasurer. She also has been on many of the chapters’ committees to help raise money for scholarships for young women to attend Youngstown State University.
Nigro is employed by Sears, where she has worked 27 years. She immigrated to the United States from Italy when she was 9.
She is married to Patsy Nigro and has three children, Carrie, Anthony and Dominic.
Yo-Mah-O of IAAP plans dinner meeting
CANFIELD — Tippecanoe Country Club is chosen as the setting for an annual
Administrative Professionals Day dinner on April 23 hosted by Yo-Mah-O-Chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals.
Dr. Roan M. Craig, superintendent of Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, will be the featured speaker. Her theme is “Framing Your Future.” During the evening, the chapter’s Member of the Year will be singled out for recognition.
The event is open to the public and will begin with cocktails at 5:30 p.m. followed by a sit-down dinner at 6. The menu will offer a choice of chicken francaise or baked stuffed pork chop. Library fundraiser is annual tea time
POLAND — The Annual Spring Tea Fundraiser will take place at 1 p.m. April 20 in the meeting room at Poland Library, 311 S. Main St.
Those attending may take their own special teacup and wear a favorite hat. They will sip tea while listening to piano music and a talk by Penny Lauer, author of “Bottled Butterfly.” The novel, set in 1930s and 1940s rural Ohio, depicts the issues faced by young women of the time. A raffle also will take place.

Casino night benefits Make-a-Wish Foundation
YOUNGSTOWN — More than 350 guests participated in a Casino Night sponsored by the United Auto Workers and General Motors on Feb. 22 at the Chevrolet Centre as a fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.
The event raised enough money to grant the wishes of 15 children.
Premier sponsors were National City Bank, Brilex Industries, Butler Wick Corp., DeBartolo Corp., the Muransky companies.
The local chapter has granted more than 6,300 magical wishes.
