Relay for Life event comes to Poland
POLAND — The American Cancer Society will host the inaugural Relay For Life in Poland on July 11-12 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 3305 Center Road (U.S. Route 224).
Committee members and teams are encouraged to get involved in this year’s event. The next committee and team captain meeting is at 6 p.m. Thursday at Poland Presbyterian Church, 2 Manor Drive.
“Those who ever wondered what Relay For Life is about or how they can help in the fight against cancer are encouraged to attend,” said John Whitinger, a Poland resident and two-time cancer survivor. Whitinger is the chairman of this year’s event.
Relay For Life is the signature event for the ACS. It’s a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate cancer survivors and raise money for research and programs.
During the event, teams of people gather and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.
“Even though there are other Relays held in areas close to Poland, a Relay in this community will enable survivors and those who live and work here to get involved in an event that’s in their hometown,” Whitinger added.
The next committee and team captain meeting gives those who are interested an opportunity to learn more about this fun event that not only raises money, but gives cancer survivors a place to meet and join together. Snacks and refreshments will be available.
