Corps wants Indian Head rock to stay put

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (AP) — The Army Corps of Engineers has put a damper on plans to display a decades-old boulder in the midst of a custody dispute at a welcome center in southern Ohio.

Corps officials said in a letter this week to the Ohio historian who led a team that pulled the 8-ton Indian Head Rock from the Ohio River that they were concerned that moving the rock could damage it.

Portsmouth city officials and authorities in Kentucky are feuding over ownership of the rock, which contains carvings and etched names.

Portsmouth wants the boulder and had planned to move it to the Scioto County Welcome Center for a public rally Thursday.
