CINCINNATI — Xavier scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Sunday to break a 2-2 tie and defeat the YSU baseball team.

The win gave the Musketeers (4-8) a split in the four-game series with the Penguins (3-9).

Cory Hornyak had two hits and scored a run while Anthony Porter added two hits for the Penguins.

Although the game wasn’t decided until the eighth, the Penguins were hurt in the end by missing early scoring opportunities and nine stranded runners.

Xavier sent 10 men to the plate in the eighth and scored six runs on four hits, a walk, an error and two hit batters.

Prep scholarships

CANFIELD —¬†Three Canfield football players will continue their playing careers in college.

Mark Carrocce, a first team all-league quarterback and three-year letterwinner, was recruited by I-AA Villanova as an athlete and will likely play defensive back. Carrocce earned special mention All-Ohio honors, rushing for 580 yards and six TDs and passing for 643 yards and seven TDs.

Kicker Pat Sankovic, who earned first team all-district and second team All-Ohio, will play at I-AA Dayton. Sankovic, a two-year letterwinner, converted 45 of 47 extra points —¬†a school record — and two field goals.

Colin Hoelzel will play outside linebacker at Div. III Ohio Northern. Hoelzel earned second team all-league honors at outside linebacker and also played tight end. He was the team’s second-leading tackler (55) and had five sacks and three forced fumbles. The Cardinals went 10-2, falling to Columbus DeSales in the Division II regional semifinals.

Women’s bowling

YOUNGSTOWN – Entries are now available for the Youngstown-Salem USBC Women’s Bowling Association’s ninth annual 9-pin no-tap handicap tournament.The per-person entry fee for the four-woman team event at Arrowhead Lanes in Columbiana, April 16 and April 18-20, is $16.

Per team cost is $64.

Murphy, Collins earn all-state

AKRON — Poland High sophomore Sean Murphy and Hubbard High junior Jermaine Collins placed during Saturday’s state indoor track and field championships at the University of Akron.

Murphy stood on the podium after finishing seventh in the 800-meter run, while Collins placed eighth in the 60-meter hurdles in Division II. Collins’ time was 9.01 seconds.

Both Murphy and Collins received a medal and recognition as all-state.

The event was sponsored by the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches.

Two other Rod Greenamyer-coached athletes who qualified for the state meet — senior Katoria Carter (400 meters) and sophomore Andre Givens (60 meter dash) — were unable to make the trip.

Miller is judge

LAS VEGAS —Tom Miller (Mineral Ridge) was a judge for Saturday’s WBC super featherweight championship fight between Manny Pacquiao of the Phillipines and Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico

In a toe-to-toe battle being dubbed “The Fight of the Year,” Marquez lost his title via split decision at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Judge Duane Ford gave “Pac Man” a 115-112 as did Miller, 114-113, while judge Jerry Roth gave Marquez the 12-round edge, 115-112.

Penguins reassign Ryan Stone

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins reassigned forward Ryan Stone to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL.

Stone has played six games with the Penguins in three NHL stints this season. He had his first NHL goal in a March 12 game against Buffalo. Stone played five games over two prior recalls with the Penguins.

Horse racing update

OLDSMAR, Fla. — Smiling and signing autographs as he left the winner’s circle, Barclay Tagg attempted to explain the remarkable turn of events at the Tampa Bay Derby.

“Anything’s possible, or impossible, in racing,” the trainer said.

His colt, Big Truck, won Saturday’s race while overwhelming favorite War Pass finished last in the first loss of his up-to-now brilliant career.

The astonishing outcome shook the road to the Kentucky Derby.
