Cause still undetermined in Mercer fire

MERCER, Pa. — Authorities are still searching for the cause of a fire that destroyed a feed mill on East Market Street.

Mercer Fire Chief Bill Finley Jr. said the call at the Tomeo Farms Feed Mill came in to the department shortly after 2:30 a.m. Monday, and when firefighters arrived the blaze already had done extensive damage.

“About 90 percent of the structure was involved, and the roof had started to collapse,” the chief said.

The feed mill and an adjacent hardware store were destroyed, but firefighters were able to protect two other adjacent businesses, the Reznor Corp. and the Stallion Co., from the blaze.

Finley said the state fire marshal’s office and Pennsylvania State Police are investigating. A cause hasn’t been determined. No one was in the businesses at the time of the fire.

A firefighter who sprained his ankle when he slipped on ice was treated at a hospital for the injury.
