NHL Roundup for Sunday’s other games

Capitals 2, Bruins 1, SO

WASHINGTON — Alexander Semin and Viktor Kozlov scored shootout goals to lift Washington. Sergei Fedorov scored Washington’s lone goal in regulation. Chuck Kobasew tied it for the Bruins in the second period. Cristobal Huet saved a shot by Kobasew in the shootout and Phil Kessel missed wide left for the Bruins. “He came up huge on a few saves,” Fedorov said. “He was outstanding.” Auld stopped Alex Ovechkin before Kozlov won it in the third round. “It’s what you expect, really, to have these tight games,” Auld said. “Every year, since they implemented the extra point in the shootout, you see so many three-point games down the stretch. Every point’s so valuable, teams don’t want to give up too many turnovers and giveaways.” With the overtime point, the Bruins moved into a sixth-place tie with the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference. Washington is two spots and two points behind eighth-place Philadelphia and the postseason cutoff. “When you’re on the winning side, shootouts are great. The other way, it’s tough to take, especially when those points are so important,” Boston coach Claude Julien said.

Flames 4, Blackhawks 2

CHICAGO — Jarome Iginla, Kristian Huselius and Dion Phaneuf scored second-period goals, and Miikka Kiprusoff made 34 saves for Calgary. Adrian Aucoin also scored for the Flames, who climbed into a three-way tie with idle Minnesota and Colorado for first place in the Northwest Division at 84 points. Calgary’s Owen Nolan and Alex Tanguay each had two assists. Robert Lang and rookie Jonathan Toews each scored their 20th goals for the Blackhawks, who lost for the fifth time in six games (1-4-1).

Hurricanes 5, Senators 1

RALEIGH, N.C. — Joe Corvo scored a career-high three goals against his former team, Cam Ward stopped 16 shots and Carolina bounced back from its worst loss of the season to beat Ottawa. “What can you say?” Corvo said. “If I got to write a storybook ending, this would be it.” Patrick Eaves, acquired with Corvo last month, scored his first goal since the trade to help the Hurricanes improve to 13-4-1 in their past 18 games. Scott Walker also scored for Carolina, which lost 7-1 at Buffalo on Friday. Dany Heatley scored for the Senators with a two-man advantage about 3 minutes into the game. “He had lots of opportunities,” Ottawa coach Bryan Murray said of Corvo. “We gave them 11 power plays. That’s his role. He didn’t do that for us but we probably didn’t get that many power plays in a game ever when he was here.”

Panthers 3, Thrashers 1

SUNRISE, Fla. — Olli Jokinen and Rostislav Olesz scored power-play goals and Florida tied a franchise record with its seventh consecutive victory. “On my goal it was the guy screening and I hit the net; the second one was a breakout we’ve been practicing all year,” Jokinen said. “I think it’s just having everybody on the same page.” Radek Dvorak added a goal for the Panthers, who haven’t lost since they were beaten by Minnesota 3-2 on Feb. 29. Florida also won seven in a row in the 1995-96 and 2005-06 seasons. Jokinen added an assist, and Brett McLean extended his point streak to six games with two assists. He has four goals and six assists during the run. The Panthers are only two points behind eighth-place Philadelphia and the postseason cutoff in the Eastern Conference. “We’re still not there,” Florida coach Jacques Martin said. “We still have some catching up to do. That’s why we can’t afford to lose.” Ilya Kovalchuk scored for Atlanta, which has lost nine straight on the road and 12 of 14 overall. Atlanta outshot Florida 30-25, the first time in 24 games the Thrashers held an edge. “I thought we played pretty hard,” said Thrashers wing Eric Boulton, who was involved in two fights. “They re fighting for their playoff lives and we gave them a good run for their money. We outshot them tonight and that’s the first time we’ve done that in a while. We’re going right to the end.”

Oilers 2, Sharks 1, SO

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Dwayne Roloson made 48 saves and stopped three more shots in the shootout, carrying the Edmonton Oilers and snap the San Jose Sharks’ 11-game winning streak.
