First black Philly mayor speaks at luncheon here Tuesday

YOUNGSTOWN — The Progressive Leadership Coalition political action committee will have a luncheon at the Youngstown Club (4th Floor), 201 E. Commerce St., at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The guest will be Rev. Dr. W. Wilson A. Goode Sr., the first black mayor of Philadelphia, who served from 1984 to 1992, a period which included the controversial MOVE house action in 1985. He has earned a doctorate of ministry and assumed the leadership of Amachi, a nonprofit organization created to provide mentors for children who have a parent in prison or jail. Goode was a community activist, commissioner for the state Public Utility Commission, and managing director for Philadelphia. The cost is $20 and lunch will be served.
