VETERANS

POLAND — Ron Massullo of the Ohio Secretary of State’s office is the speaker for the United Veterans Council of Greater Youngstown meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the Mahoning Veterans Memorial at American Legion Post 15, 35 Cortland Ave. Massullo’s talk is titled “Vote in Honor of a Veteran.”

PROMOTIONS

Air Force Chief Master Sgt. David G. DeGennaro has been promoted to his present rank.

DeGennaro, a C-17 aircraft command functional manager with 22 years of military service is assigned to Headquarters Pacific Air Forces, Hickam Air Force Base, Honolulu, Hawaii.

He graduated in 1982 from Hubbard High School, and received an associate degree in 1999 from the Community College of the Air Force, Maxwell Air Force Base, Gunter Annex, Montgomery, Ala.

Rank of staff sergeant

Marine Staff Sgt. Andre D. Gibbs was promoted to his current rank while serving at the Postal Detachment at Camp Falluhaj, Iraq. Gibbs, a son of Earl J. Gibbs, of Youngstown, and the late Navell Rhodes Gibbs, graduated in 1994 from The Rayen School. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1998. His duty stations also include Camp Lejeune, N.C., and Okinawa, Japan.

Gibbs is married to the former LaShawn D. Roberts, a daughter of Maxine E. Roberts and Lewellen J. Nelson, both of Youngstown. Mrs. Gibbs is also a 1994 graduate of The Rayen School. The couple live in Jacksonville, N.C., and have three children: Andre Jr. and Tre’Von living in Jacksonville, and a daughter, Anzhane of Buffalo, N.Y.

Family and friends are planning an event to celebrate Gibbs’ promotion and welcome him home Saturday at St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Hall, 1025 N. Belle Vista Ave., Youngstown. The event is by invitation only.

DEPLOYED

Two former area people have been mobilized and activated for future deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. They are Army National Guard Sgt. Dennis J. Morida and Army National Guard Spec. Todd R. Farnsworth.

Morida, a military police member with 15 years of military service, is normally assigned to the 320th Military Police Company, St. Petersburg, Fla. He is the son of David E. Morida and the grandson of Margaret Morida, both of Ellwood City, Pa., and is a 1994 graduate of Lincoln High School, Ellwood City.

Farnsworth, a military police member with 15 years of military service, is regularly assigned to the 583rd Military Company in Austintown. He is the son of Sally A. Boughner of Wellsville and Larry R. Farnsworth of Edinburgh, Ind. His wife, Michelle, is the daughter of Manuel and Linda Trevino of Lisbon. Farnsworth is a 1993 from Wellsville High School, and received an associate degree in 2004 from Jefferson Community College, Steubenville.

Air Force: Reserve Airman Kaila J. Summers (James A. Garfield High School, Garrettsville, ’05), daughter of Joseph and Teresa Summers of West Farmington; Airman Patricia A. Richards (Crestview High School, Columbiana, ’06), daughter of Karen Richards of New Waterford; Airman Jeffrey S. Campbell (Buckhannon Upshur High School, Buckhannon, W.Va., ’05), son of Lora Loy of Ellamore, W.Va., and Jeffrey Campbell of Niles; Reserve Airman Dustin P. Trummer (Leetonia High School, ’07), son of Travis and Laura Trummer of Washingtonville.

ACADEMY NEWS

Midshipman Katrina Brye, a 2005 graduate of United Local High School, has been selected as battalion commander for the 2008 Naval Academy Summer Seminar program. She and her leadership team will run the seminar with oversight by active duty Navy and Marine Corps officers. Brye, the daughter of Courtney and Elaine Brye of Winona, is an astronautical engineering major at the Naval Academy, where she has served as company training sergeant, completed a monthlong internship with Navy and Marine astronauts at NASA Houston Space Center, and been selected as an exchange midshipman to the Air Force Academy.
