First Federated fasts for funds, better health

NORTH JACKSON– Members of First Federated Church, 10786 Mahoning Ave., hoped to make some “fast” money and get healthier at the same time.

The church sponsored a nonconventional fundraiser during Lent involving congregational weight loss and a mission trip. Donations from the current fundraiser will go to support a church mission trip this summer to work in disadvantaged areas of Georgia.

Pledges were made by anonymous donors totaling $7 per pound for any congregation member who lost weight during the Lenten season, a traditional season for Christian fasting.

Confidential weigh-ins took place at the church before Ash Wednesday with local physician Dr. Jay Osborne. On Palm Sunday, a second weigh-in event will take place to determine the total amount of weight loss for the congregation.

Last year the church youth group held a “Big Fat Pastor” fundraiser. Brad Jagger, church pastor, said he lost weight in a similar pledge-per-pound fashion.

First Federated Church is an interdenominational church located next to Jackson-Milton High School. Other donations are being accepted for the mission trip. Visit the church Web site at www.firstfederatedchurch.net.
