Shaker decides to leave anchor job at WYTV
Stan Boney will anchor the news until a co-anchor is hired.
YOUNGSTOWN — Citing the need to spend more after-school time with her children, Angee Shaker has resigned as anchor of WYTV-TV 33’s weeknight evening news shows. Her last day will be March 21.
Shaker and her husband, Bob, have two children: Isaac, 5, and Ava, 3.
She called her resignation “a family decision.”
In December, production of WYTV newscasts was taken over by WKBN-TV 27, as part of a cost-saving deal.
Last week, the stations announced that longtime WYTV weathercaster Stan Boney would be joining Shaker as co-anchor.
Gary Coursen, director of the stations’ combined newsroom, said he is considering candidates — both in-house and external — to replace Shaker. Boney will serve as a solo anchorman until Shaker’s replacement is hired.
Shaker, who said her decision to leave was not an easy one, plans to explore employment opportunities that will be compatible with her family schedule.
A seven-year employee of WYTV, Shaker is the spokeswoman and reporter for From Steel to Scholars, an education partnership with the Regional Chamber that promotes excellence and accountability. She also fronts the One Class at a Time program.
She was an ATHENA Award nominee in 2006 and is a 2006 Mahoning Valley Professional 40 under 40 honoree. She is also a member of Leadership Mahoning Valley.
Shaker traveled to the Middle East to cover the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and also went to the Gulf coast to cover Hurricane Katrina.
A Mahoning Valley native, she is a graduate of the University of Akron.
“I’m going to miss everyone at WYTV and my new friends and colleagues at WKBN,” Shaker told The Vindicator.
Among her strongest memories is her work with From Steel to Scholars, an initiative that “put a spotlight on schools that raised their state achievement test scores.”
