Poland Live | Halftime notes
Poland trails 34-22 at halftime. The Bulldogs are shooting horribly -- 7 for 34 from the field. That's just over 21 percent. They're 1 of 14 from 3-point range.
To stay in this game, the Bulldogs needed to shoot well and they aren't.
Ben Umbel went down with what appeared to be a left shoulder injury with about a minute left in the second quarter. He jammed it when he went down with the ball, getting called for a charge in the process. Umbel played with a bad shoulder all last season and if he reaggravated it, that's very bad news for Poland fans. Very, very bad.
The Bulldogs entered today's game averaging 88 points per game. They're on track for 44, which would be 23 below their season-low.
Poland is facing its biggest nightmare. Chillicothe guard Anthony Hitchens is quick enough to beat pressure -- if Poland backs off, he just throws it over the top -- and 6-7 forward Ray Chambers is big enough to create havoc inside. He has 18 points and 12 rebounds. (Even worse, he and Hitchens each only have one foul.) Chambers is athletic enough to run the floor and he's got good size, length and leaping ability. (He sort of reminds me of former Cavaliers forward Tyrone Hill.)
To beat Poland, you need a good point guard and a strong inside presence. Chillicothe has both. Bottom line, Poland needs to start making some shots -- and it needs Umbel to be OK -- if it wants to rally.
