Angle receives honor

The Howland football coach will receive the award named for Paul Brown.

AUSTINTOWN — Howland High football coach Dick Angle has been selected to receive the Paul Brown High School Coach of the Year by the National Football Foundation.

Angle will be honored at the Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet of the Northeastern Ohio Chapter of the National Football Foundation on April 28 at LaCentre in Westlake.

Angle let the Howland Tigers to a perfect regular season 10-0 record last season and a victory in the Division I playoffs. He has been Howland’s coach since 1998.

Angle turned around a struggling program and has recorded 62 wins in his decade at Howland. The Tigers have won two Metro Athletic Conference championships and earned four state playoff appearances under his tutelage.

Prior to his stint at Howland, Angle coached at Ursuline High School from 1979-96 where he became the school’s winningest coach with 124 victories. The Irish captured four Steel Valley Conference titles and appeared in eight state playoffs.

“When I learned that I was chosen to receive this prestigious award, I was both excited and humbled,” Angle said. “To be given an award that carries Paul Brown’s name certainly says it all.

“The only reason I am receiving this is because of the tremendous support that I have received throughout my career from my family, my coaches and certainly from my players. Our program has always been a family affair.”

In his 35-year high school coaching career, Angle has garnered 217 victories at Kennedy Catholic, Ursuline and Howland.

Tickets to the banquet cost $50 each or $500 for a table of 10. They may be ordered by calling Tim Gleason at (330) 259-9090.
