Game notes: Monday, the Penguins recorded their first Horizon League postseason tournament victory with a 65-54 win over Detroit at Beeghly Center. The win gives the Penguins a two-game winstreak going into tonight’s contest which marks the furthest any YSU women’s team has advanced in the tournament since YSU joined the league in 2001-02 season. Senior Heather Karner led the way against the Titans with 18 points and also became the school’s single-season record holder for 3-point games when she made five on Monday to run her season total to 83, which broke the old record of 79 set in 1992-93 by Tiffany Adams. Wright State, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, struggled at the end of the year losing its last two contests at Green Bay 78-73 in overtime and at Milwaukee 67-54. The Raiders actually finished tied with Milwaukee for the No. 2 seed, but held a tiebreaker advantage. The Raiders were an impressive 9-3 at home this season.
Series: The Penguins won both meetings with the Raiders this season, posting a 61-58 win at Beeghly Center on Jan. 17 and a 66-58 on Feb. 16 at the Nutter Center. The Raiders hold the overall series lead 21-14 and that included two wins last season over the Penguins.
Next up: If the Penguins win tonight, they will advance to the tournament semifinal round where they would meet the winner of tonight’s Valparaiso-Wisconsin-Milwaukee game on Friday at either 5:30 or 8 p.m. at the site of the highest remaining seed.
