LORDSTOWN — The Animal Welfare League Shelter, 545 Brunstetter Road, will have a St. Patrick’s Day open house from today through March 19. Adoptions will be from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Friday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Each adoption comes with a green flossy bone or catnip toys.
Village OKs budget
NEW MIDDLETOWN — Village council has approved a $1.1 million 2008 appropriation that includes a $325,500 general fund. The budget provides $284,000 for police, $118,000 for the fire department and $169,000 for the street department. In other business, Solicitor Jeffrey Heintz told council the village must now adopt flood plain regulations governing construction in flood zones even though only a small portion of village land, located at state Route 170 and Calla Road, is in a flood plain. The regulations are part of an effort that will allow residents to purchase federal flood insurance. Council also agreed to spend up to $1,200 for a new catch basin on Calla Road to eliminate backup.
Burglary investigated
NEW MIDDLETOWN — Police are asking for information about the recent burglary of a vacant house on Circleview Court. Sgt. Vince D’Egidio said fingerprints and blood samples from the scene have been sent to a lab for analysis. Evidence of drugs and alcohol also was recovered. Anyone with information should call D’Egidio at (330) 542-2846.
Assistance program
LAKE MILTON — Milton Township Police Department is offering an assistance and check program for the elderly or shut-in people of the community. Phone in the name and address of a relative or neighbor that you feel could benefit from the assistance program. A patrolman will periodically check in with the person who is referred. Call Trustee Dave Tomaino at (330) 654-2630 to give the needed information and get started in the program.
Book to be discussed
BOARDMAN: Youngstown State University’s Community Diversity Committee presents “Kabul Beauty School: An American Woman Goes Behind the Veil.” This featured book is written by Deborah Rodriguez and Kristin Ohlson. The discussion will be facilitated by Ohlson. Sentenced in ATV thefts
YOUNGSTOWN — Andrew Phillips, 46, of South Evanston Avenue, was sentenced in Mercer County Common Pleas Court to three to 23 months in jail and ordered to make restitution for conspiracy to commit theft by unlawful taking or disposition, a felony. According to court documents, he took two all-terrain vehicles valued at $8,899 from Northstar Power Sports, 1482 N. Hermitage Road, Hermitage, Pa.
Computer classes for vets
EAST PALESTINE — An AMVETS representative will be at East Palestine Memorial Public Library, 309 N. Market St., at 6:30 p.m. Thursday to tell veterans about computer classes offered at the library. Classes cover topics such as customer service, management, Scholastic Aptitude Test preparation, Excel, Paint Shop, Word and PowerPoint. The program is free to all veterans.
Gift for Rich Center
YOUNGSTOWN — The World Financial Group Inc. has given The Rich Center for Autism a $20,000 gift to help fund the agency’s 2008 Summer of Learning program. The summer session is designed to prevent regression in children with autism over the summer months. It also helps professionals develop their skills through Summer Growth Workshop and Laboratory. The summer program serves 50 children. The World Financial Group Inc. is a financial services marketing organization offering life insurance and a broad array of financial products and services. Deanna Collela and John Beato of Poland are WFG associates and helped secure the funding for The Rich Center.
