Officer, dog fall through ice
YOUNGSTOWN — During the pursuit of two men on CSX Railroad property on Waverly Street, Patrolman Josh Kelly and his dog Hilo stepped on ice, it gave way and they landed in frigid water.
More ice gave way as Kelly fought to free himself and Hilo around 11:55 p.m. Monday. Patrolman Greg Miller, who was along the bank, entered the water and was able to grab hold of Hilo’s leash. Kelly was then able to get himself out of the water.
The two men — Michael Maynard and David Fox — were found lying on the ground as they had been instructed to do. Before landing in the water, Kelly warned that Hilo would be released if the men did not stop running. The men lay on the ground in response to Hilo’s barks.
Both suspects were arraigned Tuesday in municipal court.
Maynard, 27, of North Highland Avenue, Girard, is charged with felony drug possession (heroin), trespassing on railroad property, possession of drug abuse instruments and obstructing official business. His bond was set at $$17,500, and he will be back in court March 19.
Fox, 24, of North Brockway Avenue, is charged with trespassing on railroad property and obstructing official business. He was released on his own recognizance and will be back in court April 16.
The pursuit began when police were sent to the area of Waverly and Broadview Avenue, where Maynard and Fox left a truck. Officers followed footprints in snow for nearly three-quarters of a mile near the railroad tracks.
The suspects began to run when they spotted police.
