Helpers sought to beautify city

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown CityScape is looking for volunteers to help with its Streetscape beautification program.

Among the focus areas for the June 7 event are Wick Park, East Federal Street, the John Young Memorial, the Police Memorial, near the Choffin Career Center and near city hall. This will be the first year the program is improving Wick Park on the city’s North Side.

Volunteers will remove debris, trim trees and bushes, plant flowers and shrubs, and mulch planted areas.

Also on June 7, those with Youngstown State University, the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority, the Fifth Avenue Boulevard Neighbors, St. Elizabeth Health Center, the 7th Ward Citizens Coalition, Neighborhood Improvement Corps, the North Side Interfaith Partnership, Mahoning Commons and the Wick Park Conservation Group will clean up and landscape other areas of the city.

This is the 11th annual Streetscape program. CityScape is a nonprofit organization also involved in education and historic preservation in the city.

During the previous 10 years, the program has raised and spent about $300,000 to improve the city’s look.

Those wanting to volunteer or contribute money to the effort can contact Youngstown CityScape by e-mail — cityscapedirector@sbcglobal.net — or by telephone at (330) 742-4040.
