Scott, Branson named all-Horizon League

INDIANAPOLIS, In. — YSU junior Tiara Scott was named to the All-Horizon League Second Team and All-Newcomer Team and senior Lauren Branson was named to the league’s All-Defensive Team.

Scott led the Penguins with 15 points per game and averaged 6.6 rebounds per game against Horizon League foes. She also averaged 13 points per game overall and ranked 11th in the league in scoring.

Branson, who led the Horizon League with 5.9 assists in league games, averaged 2.1 steals per game in league play. Branson also led the league with 158 assists and 5.5 assists per game in all games.

Sellman candidate for senior award

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Youngstown State senior pitcher Ryan Sellman was announced Monday as one of 30 Division I baseball players who are candidates for the Lowe’s Senior Class Award.

The award, which focuses on the “Four C’s” of classroom, character, community and competition, is presented annually to the top senior student-athletes in eight different sports.

Sellman is the first candidate in school history for the award. He is also the only baseball player from Ohio and the Horizon League to make the 30-man list.

Sellman is a team captain and has a 3.66 GPA in integrated social studies education.

Autographs offered

BOARDMAN — Thunder players, the Storm Chasers, coaches and mascot Boomer will be on hand for autographs and pictures at the Official Thunder Fan Fest Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Center Court in the Eastwood Mall.

Children are invited to participate in games with their favorite Thunder players and the Storm Chasers.

Benefit game set

LORDSTOWN — Lordstown High School and the Village of Lordstown will host the Charity Basketball Games for the benefit of Second Harvest Food Bank Friday.

At 6 p.m. the Lordstown elementary school girls basketball team will play the elementary school faculty, followed by the Lordstown elementary school boys basketball team.

At 7:15 p.m., village employees will take on the high school faculty. Last year, the event raised $1,106 and collected 1,173 pounds of food.

Admission for adults is $3 with non-perishable food donation or $5 without non-perishable food donation.

Induction scheduled

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Road Runner’s Club will induct into its hall of fame Dan Shields, Ted Rupe and Gary Camp. The induction will take place at Mill Creek Park’s Birch Hill Cabin June 9 at 6:30 p.m.

Nypaver, Tedesco picked for PAC honors

GREENVILLE, Pa. — Thiel College junior right fielder Dave Nypaver (Howland) and junior starter Josh Tedesco (Ursuline) earned the first Presidents’ Athletic Conference hitter and pitcher of the week awards.

Nypaver is hitting .684 with 11 runs scored and 10 RBIs for the Tomcats, who finished 7-3 during their spring break trip to the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.

Nypaver had at least three hits in three games, including a 3-for-3 effort with four RBIs and four runs scored in a 19-9 win over Bluffton.

Tedesco finished 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA and 12 strikeouts during the trip. He posted a victory in the Tomcats’ 13-1 win over the U.S. Merchant Marines, allowing one run on three hits with seven strikeouts in six innings. He followed that with a six-inning, four-strikeout effort in a 19-6 win over Finlandia Univ.

5-game win streak

FT. PIERCE, Fl. — The Geneva College baseball team swept a pair of games from Chestnut Hill College, 2-1, 10-1. Geneva (5-3) won all five of its games on its Florida trip.

Oldtimers to meet

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Baseball Oldtimers Association will hold its monthly meeting at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Kramer Field. Former Marshall coach Carl Kokor will speak at the April meeting.

Kent State’s Christian named top MAC coach

CLEVELAND — Kent State’s Jim Christian is the Mid-American Conference coach of the year. Christian led the Golden Flashes to a school record 25 wins and the conference regular-season title. Kent State will be the top seed in this week’s MAC conference tournament.

It’s the second time in three years that Christian has won the award.

He’s the only coach in league history to win 20 games in his first six seasons, and he also led Kent State to its first regular-season ranking in the AP Top 25.
