Hints help eliminate scheduling problems

Dear Readers: When it’s time for your mammogram, here are a few suggestions to keep in mind from the American Cancer Society and me:

U Bring a list of the places and dates of previous mammograms and other breast treatments, if you are using a new facility.

UOn the day of the exam, don’t wear deodorant or antiperspirant. Some may contain ingredients that can appear as white spots and interfere with the reading of the mammogram. Also avoid lotion with sparkles!

UWear a skirt or pants, so you’ll only have to take off your blouse for the exam, and try to wear comfortable shoes.

UBe sure to tell the technologist any symptoms or problems you are having.

USo you don’t forget to have your mammogram, try to schedule it for the same time each year, or make next year’s appointment while at the facility and ask if someone there can call with a reminder.

Dear Heloise: I am an avid reader. I met your mother when she wore those wild nylon-net hats! She spoke to the Young Homemakers of Texas in Austin, and I rode the elevator with her.

Here is my hint: Being a recycler, I was flattening boxes and saw that the outside bottom of the box that checks came in was printed with almost all of the information that appears on my checks! Don’t know if the company that prints the checks just started doing this, as I have never seen it before. Now I give the little boxes one more step, in the shredder! LaRue Lockwood, Arlington, Texas

LaRue, my mother made those wild nylon-net hats! Visit my Web site (www.Heloise.com) to see a photo of her in one of her hats with Richard Nixon. Heloise

Dear Heloise: I got a new TV, and the remote had the power button clearly marked. However, I never could find the mute button, so I painted it with white typewriter correction fluid. Now I can see it very quickly. Donna Lala, Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Dear Heloise: To keep shower doors and the track they run on clean, just install a tension rod inside the shower and hang a clear-plastic shower curtain. After you shower, just spray the curtain down (be sure to pull the curtain across the door before showering), and when it gets dingy, toss it in the washing machine if it is the heavier-quality plastic. Elaine Verdi, Anaheim, Calif.

Dear Heloise: In the owner’s manuals for electric toothbrushes, the owner is directed to “at least once a year, let the toothbrush run completely down by leaving it on. Then recharge it.” This will help extend the battery life. Chris Suter, Ontario, Ohio

Dear Heloise: I have not bought wax paper for years. Instead, I save the wax liners from cereal boxes. It is much stronger and is wonderful for home-baked goodies. Thelma M., Colorado Springs, Colo.
