Penguins beat Detroit, 65-54, in Horizon tournament

Heather Karner scored 18 points and Tiara Scott added 11, leading Youngstown State to a 65-54 victory over Detroit in the first round of the Horizon League women’s basketball tournament Monday night at Beeghly Center.

Jessica Schloemp added seven points, nine rebounds and four assists for the Penguins (14-16), who shot just 36 percent (18-of-50) from the field, but made 22-of-28 at the foul line and forced 17 turnovers by the Titans (6-24).

The win advances the Penguins to the Horizon tournament quarterfinals, where they will play at Wright State Wednesday at 7 p.m.
