on ‘Dexter’ tonight

A native of Youngstown has a small role on tonight’s episode of “Dexter,” at 10 p.m. on CBS. Krista Swan, formerly Krista Gierlach, plays the part of a girl who sings “Amazing Grace” in a church scene. Swan, who changed her name when she moved to Hollywood in 2004 to pursue an acting career, was known in the Youngstown area for her role in a Sheely’s Furniture commercial where she said “Honey, it’s the place where we can save money!” She also appeared in Mahoning County Library commercials, as well as Green Team ads for recycling services.

Zambelli on TV show

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Zambelli Fireworks is highlighted in a segment on the National Geographic Channel documentary “Who Knew? With Marshall Brain.” The new series premieres at 8 p.m. Thursday with an episode that includes visits to three companies to explain how a particular product is made. One of those companies is Zambelli Fireworks. The making of fireworks shells is demonstrated, followed by a Zambelli fireworks display at Pittsburgh’s PNC Park.

Lecturer to discuss
Shakespeare’s lure

WARREN — Dr. Elliot Engel, historian and humorist, will speak at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at W.D. Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Ave., on “How William Became Shakespeare.” Engel will explain why Shakespeare’s language and characters have remained popular for more than 400 years. Engel has written three plays in the past five years and has led more than 1,000 travel enthusiasts to 20 countries on learning vacations. He gives 260 lectures each year. Costume jewelry display

WARREN — Vintage costume jewelry is on display at the Sutliff Museum, 444 Mahoning Ave., through April. Fashion designer Coco Chanel first popularized costume jewelry in the 1920s when she included pieces she had designed to accessorize the clothing models wore on the runways of her haute couture fashion shows. Most of the pieces in this collection are from the 1940s and ’50s and are typical of the rhinestone, simulated gemstone, bakelite and Lucite creations that have accessorized women’s day and evening wear for decades.

Salzedo Harp Duo
to perform at Mount

ALLIANCE — Salzedo Harp Duo will perform in concert at 8 p.m. March 19 in Presser Recital Hall on the Mount Union College campus. The duo, comprised of Nancy Lendrim and Jody Guinn, has a repertoire that includes works by 20th century French composers, a number of contemporary compositions and Carlos Salzedo. Both women studied at the Salzedo School in Maine and under the direction of Salzedo’s protégé and successor, Alice Chalfioux. Lendrim, a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the Cleveland Institute of Music, is a professor at the University of Toledo and is on the faculty at Heidelberg College. Guinn has performed with the Three Tenors, Barry Manilow, Ray Charles, Josh Groban and Clay Aiken. She is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music and is on the faculty of Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa., and Malone College in Canton. Youth Theatre holds
auditions for ‘Cranes’

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Playhouse Youth Theatre will hold auditions for the upcoming “Small Fry” production of “A Thousand Cranes” at 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. The play is a true story about a young victim of the Hiroshima atomic bomb who takes a Japanese legend to heart: if a sick child folds a thousand paper origami cranes, the gods will make her well again. Youth Theatre’s production will be directed by Erica Stickel. The cast calls for students 10 years old and up and adults of all ages.
