Carr, Bartus combine to aid Phantoms, 4-3
MARQUETTE, Mich. — Derek Carr scored two goals and Garrett Bartus made 31 saves, leading the Mahoning Valley Phantoms to a 4-3 victory over the Marquette Rangers in a North American Hockey League game Friday night.
Brian McGinty added a pair of assists for the Phantoms (30-16-4), who also got goals from Kyle Verbeek and Grant Blakey.
Mike Macari scored twice for the Rangers (24-24-3), while Derek Grogan had a goal and an assist.
Blakey gave Mahoning Valley a 1-0 lead 32 seconds into the game on an assist by Derek Graham.
Macari’s power-play goal with 14:25 remaining tied the score, but Carr found the back of the net with 3:58 to go in the opening period, on assists by Trent Bonnet and Brian McGinty, to give the Phantoms a 2-1 lead.
Macari’s second goal, this one unassisted, with 17:49 remaining in the second period, tied the score at 2, but Verbeek, on assists by Blakey and Scott Moser, scored a power-play goal with 10:34 remaining to give Mahoning Valley a 3-2 lead.
Carr made it 4-2 with 5:17 remaining in the game before Grogan’s goal with an extra attacker finished the scoring with 20 seconds to go.
The Phantoms outshot Marquette, 37-34, and were 1-for-4 on the power play. The Rangers were 1-for-3 with a man advantage.
