House destroyed by fire

MERCER, Pa. —¬†A fire destroyed a house in Springfield Township on Wednesday. The occupants escaped the 7:50 a.m. blaze, the township fire department said. The house at 333 Old Ash Road belonged to Betty Spence, who lived there with her son, Jerry, the fire department said. The Red Cross is assisting the family. When fire crews arrived, the house was engulfed in flames, the department said. The cause is believed to be electric heaters that overheated an electrical outlet in the living room, the department said. Also responding were fire departments from Pine Township, East End and Grove City from Mercer County, Volant from Lawrence County and Harrisville from Butler County.

Students evacuate

MERCER, Pa. — A small fire at Mercer Area High School caused the evacuation of students while firefighters cleared the building of smoke. Superintendent William Gathers said a paper filter in an exhaust vent in a wood shop class caught fire. The shop teacher was able to stop the 9:32 a.m. Wednesday fire with an extinguisher, Gathers said, but there was a lot of smoke in the building. Students were evacuated and bused to Mercer Elementary a few blocks away while firefighters inspected the building and cleared it of smoke with floor fans, he said. School was back in session Wednesday afternoon.
