Chevy Centre parking contract extended

YOUNGSTOWN — City council agreed to a temporary contract extension with a company to provide parking spots for Chevrolet Centre patrons.

USA Parking Systems of Cleveland will continue to provide up to 2,400 parking spaces at downtown decks and lots for those attending events at the center.

Council approved an eight-month contract Monday, retroactive to Feb. 1, to pay $16,575 to USA Parking for the spots.

Council members previously had expressed concern about maintaining the contract, questioning if it was appropriate for the city to provide the parking spots.

The money to pay for the spots comes from either a parking fee or an admission tax placed on most tickets for events at the facility.

The contract allows either party to terminate the deal after giving 30 days’ notice.

The city is negotiating with three companies to serve as the center’s management firm. After a company is picked, the city would discuss what to do about the parking situation, said Councilwoman Carol Rimedio-Righetti, D-4th and chairwoman of council’s finance committee.
