Canfield’s Popovec is first-team all-Ohio


COLUMBUS — Senior Kate Popovec of Canfield High School has been named to the Division II girls basketball All-Ohio first team by The Associated Press.

Popovec, who will play next season at the University of Pittsburgh, averaged 18.4 points per game, leading the Cardinals to a 21-3 record. Her teammate, Bryanne Halfhill, was named third team, and Jillian Halfhill was honorable mention.

In Div. I, Boardman’s Courtney Schiffauer was named to the second team. Schiffauer averaged 22 points per game, leading the Spartans to a 19-7 record and a berth in the state semifinals this weekend.

Also in Div. I, Howland’s Alexa Williams was named special mention, and Brittany Taylor of East, Darryce Moore of Boardman and Kelly Barzak of Howland were named honorable mention.

Other honorees in Div. II were special mention selections Amanda Stiffler of West Branch, Amy Scullion of Salem and Mya Levels of Southeast, and honorable mention choices Sam Mobley of Beaver Local, Brittany Tomaselli of East Liverpool, Joanna Novotny of Lakeview and Sarah Pelini of Cardinal Mooney.
