Woman dead, firefighters hurt

GROVE CITY, Pa. — A woman was killed and two firefighters injured in a house fire at 132 Garden Ave.

The Mercer County coroner has identified the victim as 40-year-old Patricia Andrews-Smith.

Grove City police and firefighters were still at the scene Friday afternoon investigating the early-morning fire. Not much of the house besides the brick chimney was still standing. The state fire marshal’s office was also investigating.

Patrol officer Nate Spiker said the 911 center got the call about the fire at 6:10 a.m. When firefighters got there, the house was engulfed in flames, he said.

He said that other people in the house escaped without injuries. He did not know for sure how many people were in the duplex at the time of the fire.

Spiker said it does not appear that natural gas played a part in the fire. The cause of the fire was still undetermined Friday afternoon.

Grove City Fire Chief Jack Badger says the injured firefighters were flown to the burn unit at UPMC Mercy in Pittsburgh. Spiker said they were from the Pine Township Fire Department and are not critically injured.

Along with Pine Township and Grove City, fire departments responded from Mercer, Hempfield Township, Jefferson Township, Harrisville, Stoneboro, Jackson Center, Slippery Rock, Springfield Township and Volant.
