Summer camp options
MONACA, Pa. — The Penn State Beaver Office of Continuing Education will offer 18 summer camps for ages 3 to 18 in June, July and August. All camps are open to the public. Academic enrichment camps are Cheerleading, Circus Camp, Crime Scene Investigation, Digital Video and Movie Production, French, Musical Theatre, Princess Camp, Robotics, Spanish and Wizardry. Sports camps are Baseball, Basketball, Fitness, Golf, Soccer, Softball, Tennis and Volleyball. The campus is also offering a “Be a Penn State Student for a Day” program from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, providing high school students with the opportunity to attend classes at Beaver and have lunch with current campus students. Kindergarten orientation
YOUNGSTOWN — Victory Christian School will hold an orientation meeting for prospective kindergarten parents at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in room 104 in Pleasant Valley Church, 2055 Pleasant Valley Road, Liberty. The program will include a presentation on the kindergarten program and a tour of facilities. Parents may also set a date to return for a visit with their child. Open enroll at Howland
HOWLAND — The school district will be accepting applications for open enrollment for the 2008-09 school year from Monday, March 10, through Friday, March 14. They can be filed by the parent or guardian only from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 3 p.m. at the superintendent’s office, 8200 South St. S.E. Kindergarten and grades nine, 10 and 11 are closed.
Egg hunt at Malone
CANTON — The Malone College junior class will hold its 2008 Easter Egg Hunt from 10 a.m. to noon March 15 in Osborne Hall. To buy tickets, call the Student Development Office at (330) 471-8273. There will be games, prizes, refreshments and egg decorating. Tickets are $3.50 per child if bought in advance or $5 at the door. There is no charge for adults, but children must be accompanied by an adult.
Grove City makes list
GROVE CITY, Pa. — The Intercollegiate Studies Institute has included Grove City College as one of 134 quality schools in its guide “Choosing the Right College 2008-09: The Whole Truth about America’s Top Schools.” Grove City College is one of 33 colleges and universities highlighted in the Mid-Atlantic region. The guide offers students and parents an independent, truthful assessment of what is really happening at 134 of the nation’s top schools. It provides specific advice on which professors to seek out and which courses and departments to avoid. McDonald school calendar
McDONALD — The McDonald Board of Education has approved the new school calendar for the 2008-09 school year. Classes for pupils start Aug. 25 and end June 4. Winter vacation is from Dec. 22 to Jan. 4, and spring recess is April 6 to April 13. Graduation is May 31.
Open house at Akiva
YOUNGSTOWN — Akiva Academy, 505 Gypsy Lane, will hold a “Discovery Day” open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. Families and individuals who are interested in learning more about the school are welcome. There will be games, projects and fun-filled activities to entertain. Participants are also encouraged to visit the school’s Scholastic Book Fair. Akiva Academy is a private elementary school for kindergarten through sixth grade. The school provides a full-day kindergarten program and small class sizes and recently unveiled a new state-of-the-art computer facility. All sixth-grade pupils have their own laptops. Joining in History Day
YOUNGSTOWN — School pupils in grades six to 12 from Ohio’s northeast counties will participate in the April 5 National History Day in Ohio competition at Youngstown State University. This year’s theme is “Conflict and Compromise in History,” and pupils are encouraged to submit imaginative exhibits, original performances, media documentaries, Web sites and papers related to that topic. “Students make history come alive through their research and projects,” said Megan Wood, state coordinator for National History Day in Ohio. “History Day demonstrates that students learn history when they do history.” District winners will compete in the state event April 26 at Columbus State Community College. Fifty of them will advance to the national competition June 15-19 in Washington, D.C.
