Kindergarten in Liberty will run full days

LIBERTY — Children in kindergarten in the Liberty schools will start attending full-day sessions this fall.

The addition of all-day kindergarten is the latest move in the Liberty Board of Education’s plan to transform Liberty from a good school district to a great learning institution.

“We know that there are incredible benefits to the students who attend all-day kindergarten,” said Superintendent Mark Lucas. The daylong sessions allow children to learn more independently and be more productive while providing an appropriate balance between academics and socialization, he said.

The entire district, as well as parents and teachers, will realize better academic performance from these children, Lucas said.

The district has been implementing changes that are the result of almost three years of study and community input, and all-day kindergarten is just the latest development. Other changes already announced include improvements to the high school curriculum and a mandate that all students take the ACT college test.

More changes may be forthcoming.

Gloria Lang, board president, said the board welcomes and needs community input and guidance as it seeks to improve the educational process.
